The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, August 3:

Officers were in the 900 block of South Mayflower when they saw a known male subject sitting on a front porch. A record check of the 30-year-old male Caucasian revealed that he had 2 misdemeanor warrants totaling $60,000, so he was arrested at the scene.

Between 8:10 p.m. on August 2 and 12:35 a.m. on August 3, an auto burglary occurred at 24-Hour Fitness, 125 North First. Unknown suspect(s) broke the victim’s car window and stole a purse that was stored underneath a seat.

Monday, August 4:

Units responded to the 300 block of Sharon around 6:25 a.m. in reference to a suspicious occupied vehicle. A welfare check was conducted and a man and a woman were apparently sleeping in the car. Record checks revealed that the 22-year-old male Asian had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. A consent search of the vehicle was made, and officers found three baggies containing a white crystalline substance resembling methamphetamine and a glass tube with a white residue. The man was taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and an outstanding warrant.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m., a traffic stop was made at Third and Longden because officers observed the driver almost hit a curb and failed to maintain a direct course of travel. The 26-year-old male Hispanic driver was unlicensed and officers also detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. A field sobriety test was conducted, and it was determined that the driver was operating the vehicle while under the influence and was arrested.

Tuesday, August 5:

Around 7:59 a.m., units were dispatched to the 2200 block of South Baldwin regarding an auto burglary. The victim advised that between 7:30 p.m. on August 4 and 7:40 a.m. on August 5, unknown suspect(s) entered her vehicle and stole credit cards, a checkbook, gift cards, and cash from bags left in the car. Several hours later, she informed police that her credit card was recently used at a liquor store in Arcadia. Officers responded to the liquor store and learned that the suspects were just in the store making additional purchases. An area check was conducted and a 26-year-old male Caucasian and a 19-year-old male Hispanic were both apprehended at Golden West and Las Tunas. The stolen property was recovered on their persons and they were charged with grand theft, commercial burglary, and receiving stolen property.

A victim came to the station to file a fraudulent use of a credit card report around 7:34 p.m. Unknown suspect(s) gained access to the victim’s credit card information by unknown means and proceeded to make 11 unauthorized purchases totaling over $1,780.

Wednesday, August 6:

A commercial burglary occurred between 7:00 p.m. on August 5 and 6:54 a.m. on August 6 at All Star Liquor, 8 East Duarte. Unknown suspect(s) pried open a door to the business and stole bottles of alcohol, cartons of cigarettes, and a gun. While investigating the burglary, an illegal slot machine was found at the location. The owner was issued a citation and a field release booking order, and the slot machine was seized.

Units responded to the 1200 block of West Huntington around 4:48 p.m. regarding a vehicle tampering incident. Unknown suspect(s) drilled a hole into a gas tank to possibly steal gasoline. As a result, fuel leaked from underneath the car and the Fire Department was called to handle the clean up.

Thursday, August 7:

Shortly after 1:40 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 1020 Lounge, 1020 South Baldwin, regarding a fight in progress involving 30 or more subjects. While en route, officers learned that all the subjects were dispersing and they were leaving in various vehicles. A bouncer at the location said that a male victim was struck with several beer bottles, kicked several times while on the ground, and was possibly stabbed with a knife. Officers found a butterfly knife with some possible blood residue at the scene; however, no victims or suspects were located during an area check.

Around 7:36 a.m., a victim came to the station to file a forgery report. She indicated that while she was out of the country, her ex-husband deposited a non-sufficient fund check into her checking account, took two checks from her checkbook, and then made out the checks to himself for $7,500 by forging her signatures on the checks.

Friday, August 8:

An armed bank robbery occurred around 10:00 a.m. at Bank of the West, 1155 West Huntington. A male Caucasian, in his 30′s, wearing a blonde wig and blue cap, displayed a semi-automatic handgun at the bank teller and demanded money. Fearing for her safety, the teller gave the suspect money from her cash drawer. The suspect then fled in a red four-door Chevrolet. An area check was conducted, but the suspect was not found.

Around 3:43 p.m., a strong-arm robbery occurred at the Westfield mall parking lot. Two witnesses advised that two male Hispanic suspects grabbed a female victim’s purse. Once taking the property, the suspects ran to a 76 gas station and fled in the silver Toyota Corolla driven by a male Asian suspect.

Saturday, August 9:

During a routine patrol, officers found a man sleeping in a vehicle parked at Foothill Middle School around 4:53 p.m. A record check revealed that the 47-year-old male Hispanic had 3 outstanding misdemeanor warrants totaling $135,000. The man was taken into custody without incident.

Around 7:52 p.m., a victim came to the station to file an identity theft report. On July 6, the victim received a call from a mortgage company indicating that she had taken out two mortgage loans on March 1 and that she was late on her payments. She was informed that the first loan was for $417,000 and the second for $190,500. Unknown suspect(s) obtained the victim’s identifying information by unknown means and took out two home loans without her knowledge.

For the period of Sunday, July 27, through Saturday, August 2, the Police Department responded to 951 calls for service of which 124 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, July 27:

A traffic stop was conducted in the 100 block of West Duarte around 12:29 a.m. for an equipment violation. A 45-year-old female Caucasian driver and a 50-year-old male Caucasian passenger were contacted. The woman was determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance, and a container of an off-white rock-like substance resembling cocaine and a smoking pipe were found. She was arrested for being under the influence, possession of a narcotic controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The man was taken into custody for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

Officers responded to County Park, 405 South Santa Anita, around 2:14 p.m. regarding a fight in progress. During a charity event, a victim and a known suspect got into an altercation. The 25-year-old male Hispanic suspect pulled out a knife from his arm sling, charged at the victim, and slashed the victim multiple times. The suspect then fled the scene and the victim was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Monday, July 28:

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., units responded to Motel 6, 225 Colorado Place, in reference to an attempted kidnapping, battery, and robbery incident. The victim advised that she was at the location to meet another woman who was involved in a love triangle with her boyfriend. While in the parking lot, her boyfriend/suspect, a 23-year-old African-American, showed up at the scene, grabbed the victim by the hair, and tried to push her into his car. He finally succeeded and started to drive off, but the victim was able to exit the vehicle and ran into the motel office for help. The motel clerk called police and the suspect took the victim’s purse and fled in his silver Toyota SUV. An area search was conducted, but the suspect was not located.

Loss prevention personnel from JC Penney advised that they had detained a 19-year-old woman for theft around 3:52 p.m. The woman was seen hiding merchandise in a shopping bag and left the store without making payment. A private person’s arrest was made, and she was taken into custody for commercial burglary. Additional stolen items from Old Navy, Sephora, Victoria’s Secret, and Wet Seal were recovered in the shopping bag. Officers reviewed the surveillance tape and discovered that another female suspect was also involved in the theft. The second 20-year-old suspect later came to the station to visit the arrestee, so she was taken into custody as well.

Tuesday, July 29:

A victim came to the station around 2:04 p.m. to report a road rage incident that escalated into an assault with a deadly weapon as the suspect driver tried to ram the victim on his motorcycle. The victim/motorcyclist indicated that a male Filipino driver in a gold Dodge Durango cut him off on the road, and he motioned to the suspect driver to use his turn signal. The suspect then drove off, with the victim following behind, but the suspect suddenly slammed on his brakes. This caused the victim to panic brake in order to avoid a collision. When the victim tried to pass the Durango, the suspect intentionally veered to block the victim’s path. Finally, the victim pulled his motorcycle to the curb, and the suspect steered his vehicle directly at the victim and attempted to ram him. The victim had to leap off his motorcycle to avoid being struck, and the motorcycle fell to the ground. The suspect then sped away from the scene.

Shortly before 9:00 p.m., an attempted carjacking occurred at Arcadia Supermarket, 645 West Duarte. A female victim was placing her grocery bags in her trunk when a male African-American suspect approached from behind and grabbed her around the neck with both hands. The victim tried to scream but she could not because of the tight grip around her neck. The suspect tried to pull the victim by the neck, but witnesses yelled at the suspect and he fled the scene on foot.

Wednesday, July 30:

Around 1:39 p.m., an armed robbery occurred at Santa Anita Inn, 130 West Huntington. A female victim was walking to her room when a male African-American, in his 30′s, 150 pounds, pointed a handgun at her back and ordered her into her room. A female Caucasian suspect, 20-25 years of age, 5’7″, blonde hair, with acne and crooked teeth, also entered the room. The male suspect ordered the victim to put on high-heeled shoes and do squats, while the female suspect went through the victim’s property. Every time the victim stopped doing the squats, she was struck on her face by the male suspect. After taking cash, clothing, and a luggage bag, the suspects fled the scene and the victim was transported to AMH for a fractured jaw.

Three male Hispanic suspects, ages, 31, 42, and 49, were arrested at the racetrack around 2:18 p.m. for grand theft and possession of burglary tools. They were behaving suspiciously in the parking lot and security personnel detained them. A freshly cut catalytic converter (still hot to the touch), reciprocating saws, and bags of tools were found.

Officers issued a parking citation around 10:48 p.m. to an illegally parked vehicle in the alleyway behind Bar Twist, 48 East Huntington. A record check of the vehicle revealed that the registered owner was currently on parole for narcotic sales. After issuance of the citation, the officer left the location but later saw the same vehicle being driven by a male subject. The car was pulled over and a consent search revealed baggies containing Ecstasy tablets, dried mushroom, marijuana, cocaine, and a digital scale. The 22-year-old male Hispanic was arrested for possession/purchase/for sale of narcotic controlled substance, possession of marijuana/hashish for sale, and felony parole violation.

It was reported that four African-American suspects punched a male Hispanic victim several times, and the victim tried throwing a chair at them in retaliation. The possible suspects were later apprehended at different locations, but no witnesses could be located in a timely manner to identify the subjects. Information was gathered on the subjects and they were released.

Friday, August 1:

A grand theft occurred in the 100 block of West Duarte between 6:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Unknown suspect(s) removed gardening equipment from the victim’s truck. The total reported loss was over $1,500.

An attempted robbery occurred in the 100 block of West Longden around 4:36 p.m. Two male Hispanic suspects confronted two male victims near a construction site. The suspects displayed a handgun and demanded money and personal property from the victims. However, the victims did not have any money and offered to go back to the construction site to see if any of the other workers had money. The victims went back to their worksite to call police, and the 17 and 20-year-old suspects were later located and arrested.

Saturday, August 2:

Around 1:19 a.m., a traffic stop was initiated at La Cadena and Fairview for a code violation. Officers detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage from the driver, and a field sobriety test was conducted. Around 12:22 p.m., a victim came to the station to file a theft report. She claimed that a male Hispanic took her credit card from her wallet while she was at Dave & Buster’s, and he later made almost $300 in unauthorized purchases. Officers watched the surveillance video and saw the suspect steal the victim’s credit card.
Monday, July 7:
A traffic stop was initiated at Rosemead and Huntington around 7:51 a.m. for an expired registration. A male African-American driver was contacted and he initially provided officers with his brother’s name and date of birth. A search of his vehicle was conducted and officers found a social security card and medical card with his real name. The 26-year-old man later admitted his true identity, and record checks revealed that he was never issued a driver’s license and he also had 2 outstanding warrants. He provided a false name because he wanted to evade capture for the warrants and the lack of having a driver’s license. He was arrested at the scene without incident.
A grand theft occurred at Carmine’s Restaurant, 311 East Live Oak, around 7:54 p.m. A female victim was sitting at an outside waiting area in front of the restaurant when a male Hispanic approached, reached over the railing, grabbed the victim’s purse, and fled on foot.
Units were dispatched to the 600 block of West Naomi regarding a grand theft and identity theft incident that occurred on July 9. The victim advised that she was at WalMart in Duarte when she was approached by a 70-year-old male Hispanic. He spoke in Spanish, which she did not understand, and a 20-year-old male Hispanic later approached and offered to help translate. The elderly suspect said that he needed money for his son’s surgery and wanted to get cash for the diamonds that he had. The younger suspect and the victim said that they would help, so they all drove to a Target store and the younger suspect went inside to supposedly exchange the diamonds for cash. He later came out of the store with $20,000 in an envelope. They then drove the victim to Bank of America in Arcadia, where she gave the suspects’ her social security number, her credit card number, and she also withdrew $5,000 from her credit card account in exchange for two diamonds. On July 10, she went to Kevin Jewelers at Westfield mall and learned that the diamonds were fake.
