The kick off for the extension of the Metro Gold Line from Pasadena out to Azusa was held Saturday, November 21 at the site of the future Monrovia Gold Line Station in the historic Santa Fe Station at the Northwest corner of Myrtle Avenue and Duarte Road.

Work on the Gold Line Foothill Extension to the Arcadia and Monrovia stations is expected to begin as soon as early next year and is expected to create hundreds of new jobs as well as increase economic investment centering around the new public transit options the project will bring to the area.

Funds for this project are coming from the monies generated by Measure R, a ballot initiative passed last year which increased sales taxes by one half cent in order to pay for various public transit related projects and improvements.

The Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority hopes to have the extension completed to Azusa by 2013, and the group has ambitions to extend the line as far as Ontario, where it would connect with that city’s international airport. 5th District County Supervisor Mike Antonovich has repeatedly touted this idea as an important step towards a more regional approach to the traffic congestion plaguing Los Angeles County.

In addition, the City of Monrovia and L.A. Metro are still discussing the possible creation of a maintenance yard for the Gold Line in the industrially zoned area near the station south of the 210 Freeway and north of Duarte Rd., just west of the Home Depot building.

A specific plan for this aspect of the project is currently being created by Monrovia City staff so that it will be ready in the event that an agreement can be reached.
